Low Light Photography

ISO:

  • High ISO makes grainy photos in low light
  • APS-C sensor, suggesting shooting below ISO 3200 (3200 ceiling)
  • Full frame, suggesting shooting below ISO 6400 (6400 ceiling)

Aperture:

  • Probably the first thing to try changing in low light
  • You can use wider aperture to let in more light. This means a smaller denominator in the f/N number.
  • Just remember, this narrows your DOF. Harder to focus on what you want.

Lower your aperture as far as it will go. Then you can perhaps lower your ISO as well.

Shutter:

  • Slower shutter speed (larger X in 1/X) lets in more light.
  • Full Frame, suggested shutter speed (1/X) matches focal length (Y mm)
  • APS-C sensor, suggested double focal length
