Org Cite is a way of citing external sources in your document. It works with an external citation database, and a syntax that lets you insert references to entries in the database which get expended.

There are systems that will insert the citations for you, like citar.

Database formats include bibtex, biblatex and natbib. Some other piece of software usually produces this file, for example, Zotero.
